Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery

We are located between Eugene and Florence (by way of Triangle Lake), established in 1883 with about 300 known burials.

As we are a non-profit, all-volunteer cemetery, families are encouraged to maintain their loved ones’ sites, but we recognize that it’s not possible for everyone.  If you have family buried in other states and can't get to them, please consider "paying it forward" - volunteer to help a little here, while you count on others doing their part where your loved ones are interred.

Emma’s Kindness Club Project of 2018
Emma Meier is 10 years old and is a member of Siuslaw School District’s Kindness Club.  Each member of the Kindness Club was challenged to create a community  service project over the summer.

With her family's interest in genealogy, Emma became inspired by a facebook page:   https://www.facebook.com/TheGoodCemeterian/.

It prompted her passion to help clean, up and restore headstones.  Emma said,
“I think it’s important because they could get forgotten if they’re just covered in stuff and no one would know they are there.”

https://thesiuslawnews.com/article/historic-cemetery-experiences-a-little-kindness

After lots of research with different cemetery organizations, she chose our own Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery.

She began with a fundraiser in July of 2018 for supplies to clean the stones, her goal was $500 and with the assistance of Sugar Mama's Cupcakes & Goodies  she was able to sell “kindness themed” baked goods for the project supplies.

On October 16th Emma and her kindness crew came to clean up and restore headstones.  The day went great - a few Board members were on hand to mow, trim and weed, and then Emma and her team got busy removing moss, spraying and scrubbing...  Her and her awesome team of 7 managed to get 25 headstones cleaned in 3 to 4 hours.

Emma didn’t stop there though; we were contacted to see if they could return to work on the headstones for Veterans’ Day. Emma’s team included 22 adults and kids, and they got dozens more headstones cleaned!  It was a wonderful team effort, and Emma’s Kindness Project of 2018 made sure memorials are restored and not forgotten.

Great job, Emma, and everyone who has helped preserve our heritage!!
                 May 2018 Work Days
Thanks to our volunteers!!
Thanks to everyone who came out and helped us on our recent work days!!  It looks terrific at DPC - At our work days on 5/5 and 5/12, we not only mowed, cleaned and trimmed, but also completed installing the granite headstones from the Oregon State Parks & Rec's Historic Cemeteries Grant!

Row markers have been added and a directory of graves is posted to help locate your loved ones.  The Ash Scattering Garden and gravel paths are coming along, and a fire ring is added!
Volunteer crews dug and leveled  forms before setting  the grant headstones in cement
Board members Duane and Gerry preparing the cement
Some of the 17 volunteers who  helped place the headstones purchased by grant money
Grant headstones included 12  "art" markers for known burials with unknown occupants, and 24 markers for known people
Some of the temporary markers (some  were 30 years old) that were replaced by grant headstones - no more information will be lost to time, weather or mowers!
Board member Don donated tons of gravel plus a fire ring surrounded by 10 rocks
Board members Don and Johnnette  and crew adding a path overlooking the river

Spring Headstone Work Day  -  Saturday 5/5/18,  9am - 3 or 4 pm

The remaining 16 Headstones were placed for previously unmarked graves!

On our first Headstone work day, 9/23/17, we placed 16 of the 36 markers purchased with the  generous grant  for $5,862  from the
OREGON PARKS & REC Historic Cemeteries program,  marking previously unmarked or poorly marked graves.

Thank you to everyone who helped, and to the OPRD Historic Cemeteries Program for your support of this important project!!
